Pottery is a hands-on art form that engages the tactile sense in a deep, meditative way. Pottery making has been a part of human culture for thousands of years. Archaeological digs often uncover pottery made by ancient civilizations. In addition to being an enjoyable hobby, making pottery can teach kids about history and culture. It can also help kids develop their fine motor skills by squishing, pinching, rolling and pulling clay. The forgiving nature of clay helps kids who may be afraid to make mistakes to not be stopped by failure and learn from their missteps.

Making pottery is therapeutic for adults as well. Using the hands to explore and shape clay promotes a meditative, self-centered state. As the body relaxes, the brain produces less cortisol and people can become more aware of their breathing and heartbeat. Before pottery can be shaped and decorated, it must dry thoroughly. During this time it is known as “greenware.” Once it dries to a leather-type feel, the potter can trim, sculpt, or knead the clay into shapes they desire. Decorators can then add a glaze or underglaze. Once the items are glazed they are fired in a kiln to high temperatures.
