The firing process changes the chemical and physical properties of the clay, making it more durable and less porous.

Firing occurs at different temperatures based on the type of clay used. Higher temperature firings result in a greater degree of sintering, which creates a more durable product. Clay that is fired at lower temperatures may be glazed. There are a number of glazes that can be applied to pottery, including glossy, matte and opaque.

A good potter is willing to experiment with their materials and tools. This allows them to expand their creativity and become better at the craft.
