What is Pottery?

Whether it’s a cute turtle your kid painted purple or a unique mug you found in an antique shop, pottery is a great way to decorate your home. It has a calming effect, which helps to ease anxiety and stress.

Pottery is a type of ceramic art that uses clay to make a wide variety of decorative and functional pieces. It is made from special clays and other materials mixed together in a certain ratio to achieve the desired result.

The process of making pottery begins with raw clay that is rolled, cut, pressed or extruded to form slabs of clay which can then be formed into shapes, joined together, or altered to create vessels or sculptural pieces. It is then thrown or fired to a particular temperature and transformed into pottery.

Once the pot has been shaped, it is then baked in a ceramic kiln at a temperature between 1000 and 1200 degrees Celsius. It is then finished with a ceramic glaze which can be applied through brushing, dipping or airbrushing.

It also allows for creativity and experimentation, which can lead to some interesting designs. Often, potters will start with a specific idea in mind and then work their way through different techniques, tools, and material until they find something that is appealing.
