What is Pottery?

Pottery is the sculptural and utilitarian art of shaping clay to create useful containers such as mugs, bowls, plates and vases. Pottery has been a part of human culture for thousands of years and pottery fragments have been found in archaeological sites from all over the world, showing that pottery was made by many different cultures over time.

Potteries have evolved into a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors throughout the centuries. The development of ceramic glaze made pottery less permeable, increasing its popularity and practicality. The decoration of pottery varies, too; it can be painted, incised, or covered with slip (a watery liquid). The surface can also be carved.

To make pottery, a potter must first prepare the clay. This is done by kneading the clay, which allows the moisture to spread evenly through the entire slab. It is then ready to be molded, either by hand or with the help of a wheel.

A kiln is essential to pottery making because it chemically transforms the raw clay into something that can last forever. Pottery is not easy to create, and it takes a long time to learn the process.

It’s important to practice your craft and experiment with various materials, tools, glazes and firing temperatures. Having a good selection of pottery supplies will ensure that you can be as creative and successful as possible.
