What is Pottery?

Pottery is a hand-based, ceramic art form that involves molding clay to create an object. After the object is created it is then heated in a kiln to harden and strengthen it. The resulting pottery piece can be either functional or sculptural in nature. It is one of the oldest forms of artisanal craft, and fragments of pottery have been found in many civilizations and time periods throughout history. Pottery is a highly durable art form, and the items made from it tend to last much longer than those crafted from less durable materials like pewter or wood.

There are several types of pottery that can be crafted; stoneware, earthenware and porcelain are the most common. Stoneware is most commonly used for cooking and baking, as it can evenly distribute heat. It is also a common material for storage containers, and it can be glazed to give it a more decorative look. Earthenware is not as durable as stoneware, but it is still a good choice for cookware, or for storage containers. Porcelain is the most difficult and expensive type of pottery to make, as it requires high temperatures in order to be fired properly.

Pottery is a therapeutic and meditative craft that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It requires delicacy and strength at the same time, as well as attention to detail. It teaches you to let go of control and allow yourself to be a little bit messy, which is sometimes a great way to get over a creative block.
