There are three main types of pottery. Stoneware is made from a specific clay and fired at a higher temperature. Earthenware is made from a different type of clay and is fired at a lower temperature. Porcelain is a type of ceramic commonly used for tableware.

Pottery has been crafted since early prehistoric times. Paint has been applied to pots since the early prehistoric periods. A variety of pigments change colour when fired. Painting can be very elaborate.

Fine wares are generally expensive and well-made. They are also fragile. Often the aesthetic taste of a culture is reflected in the type of ware that is produced.

In Europe, the porcelain became extremely popular in the 18th century. European manufacturers learned to produce porcelain. Although porcelain is harder than stoneware, it is still susceptible to scratches.

Porcelain uses different materials to create its shape. Raw clay contains true clay particles and may contain other substances such as iron oxides or mica.

Clays that are produced from various regions of the world have slightly different compositions. Raw clay contains feldspar, which is a mineral that is not fully decomposed. During the manufacturing process, the feldspar is reduced in water. This allows the minerals to fuse together.

Raw clay can be decorated by incising patterns into the surface. Colours are often added to the ware after firing.
