After gathering all of the necessary tools, you will need to prepare your clay. This is done by adding water to the clay until it has a consistency similar to thick cream. This mixture is then called a joining slip and will be used to join sections of your clay together. You will want to make sure that your joining slip is free of any dust or debris.
The next step is to center your clay on the wheel head. This can be a bit challenging for newbies and may require some practice. Fortunately, there are a lot of great videos on YouTube that can help you master this technique. Essentially, you will need to wedge your clay either by using the spiral or bull’s head wedging technique. Once your clay is centered, you will be ready to begin spinning and shaping your creation!
