The Basics of Making Pottery

Throughout the ages, people have relied on pottery to help them survive and improve their lives. Whether it is a utilitarian container for food or something decorative, a pot can add beauty and functionality to your home or office.

Pottery is made by molding clay into a specific shape and then firing it to make it durable and hard. This process requires a variety of tools and techniques.

The first step is to acquire the proper material for your wares. Clay can come from a wide range of sources and is usually obtained from local riverbeds or pits. Its properties include a high plasticity (ability to form without cracking), strong elasticity and the ability to be fired at certain temperatures.

This enables potters to create consistent, beautiful wares that can be produced in large quantities. The pottery is then shaped by coiling, slab building or throwing on a potter’s wheel before being dried and subsequently fired.

Glazing is the finishing touch that seals and protects your work from liquids. The glaze contains a combination of elements that fuse during the fire to make the pot vitreous, meaning it is impervious to water.

Colourants can be used to produce a range of shades and hues. Some colours are more sensitive to kiln atmospheres than others, so choose carefully.

When creating your own pottery, it is important to remember that it takes time and practice to master the craft. Experiment with different materials, glazings and tools to find what works for you. Taking the time to become a better artist is well worth the effort.
