The Art of Making Pottery

Pottery is an art of shaping and creating ceramic objects. It requires the use of special clays combined with other materials such as pigment, glaze, and water. Some of the more advanced methods involve high temperatures.

One of the most famous pottery types is porcelain. This was first made in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907 ce). Porcelain is soft and tends to collapse when fired, but it has a remarkably durable structure.

Another major type of pottery is stoneware. Stoneware is a hard, non-porous material that takes a long time to fire.

The process of making pottery has been around for a very long time. It is a self-taught craft that can be practical or decorative. There are a number of basic tools and techniques that potters should learn.

Pottery has been used in many cultures throughout history. Ceramic vessels are sometimes the last vestiges of vanished cultures. However, pottery is an expensive craft.

The earliest forms of pottery were made by hand. These were typically flat slabs of clay that were luted together to form cylinders. They were then polished and polished again.

A newer technique developed in the early twentieth century was the machine-made cup. In this technique, small parts such as cup handles were pressed into molds and attached to the vessel.

The oldest known pottery forms were made by pre-columbian potters. They built up wares with pinching and coiling methods.

The modern technique of making pottery involves using a pottery wheel. The invention of the wheel probably occurred in Mesopotamia around the 4th millennium BCE. Across much of Africa, Europe and Asia, the wheel spread.
